Description

The Baikal MP-446 Viking is the civilian and export variant of the MP-443 Grach — the service pistol adopted by the Russian Armed Forces in 2003 to replace the Makarov. Developed by designer Vladimir Yarygin at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant during the Grach trials of the 1990s, the platform was certified as the MP-446 Viking for sporting, training, and export use in 2004.The primary distinction between the military MP-443 and the civilian MP-446 is the frame material: the Viking uses a high-strength polyamide polymer frame with steel reinforcement insert, rather than the military's all-steel construction, reducing weight by approximately 100 grams. This modification simultaneously addressed export regulations in many jurisdictions concerning civilian versus military-specification pistols. The barrel was also intentionally recalibrated to prevent safe use of high-pressure military armour-piercing ammunition. The DA/SA trigger with exposed external hammer allows cocked-and-locked carry with the ambidextrous frame-mounted safety engaged — a carry philosophy familiar to shooters of the CZ 75 and Browning Hi-Power families, as the Yarygin design draws conceptual influence from CZ's inverted rail system. Automatic firing pin safety provides passive drop protection. The 18-round double-stack magazine provides meaningful operational capacity for sporting and training applications.
