Manufactured by German Sport Guns (GSG) in Arnsberg, Germany, it faithfully replicates the look, feel, and complete manual of arms of the classic Colt 1911 Government Model while chambering the far more affordable and low-recoil .22 Long Rifle cartridge — making it one of the most practical training companions available for 1911 platform shooters.

Every external control is positioned identically to the full-calibre 1911: the frame-mounted thumb safety engages and disengages exactly as expected, the grip safety requires a proper firing grip to disengage, the slide release and magazine release are in their familiar positions, and the single-action trigger requires manual cocking before the first shot. A shooter training on the GSG 1911 is developing the identical muscle memory required for a full-calibre 1911 — at a fraction of the per-round cost.

The zinc alloy frame provides a weight and balance comparable to the aluminium-framed original, and the 127mm (5-inch) barrel matches the Government Model's full-size specification.
